Course abstract

Students acquire theoretical knowledge about the organization and management of agricultural processes, ascertain the economic importance of agriculture and its institutional system, build up an understanding of the specifics of key agricultural industries and get insight into the factors of production and resources used by an agricultural enterprise.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

1. Students will be able to: demonstrate the knowledge and understanding of the nature of the agricultural sector and its role in the national economy - report, a test
2. Demonstrate the knowledge and understanding of the institutional framework for an agricultural enterprise - practical assignments, a test
3. Demonstrate the knowledge and understanding of organisation and management of production processes in the crop industry, horticulture and the livestock industry - practical assignments, a test
4. Independently acquire, select and analyse information on the agricultural sector - independent work
5. Reasonably explain and discuss matters pertaining to the agricultural sector and organisation and management of production at agricultural enterprises - discussions in seminar classes, a test
6. Calculate fertiliser application rates, feed rations for livestock and plan crop rotation for agricultural enterprises - test
7. Argue and present the results of a study - presentation
8. Responsibly plan the completion of the assignments given and attend lectures and seminar classes - independent work, activity in seminar classes
9. Cooperate with others - independent work, activity in seminar classes
10. Reasonably express the opinion on trends and developments in an agricultural industry - examination, a report
11. Analyse and examine the regulatory framework governing agricultural enterprises – report

1. Agriculture as a sector of the national economy. (lecture - 2 hours, practical assignment - 2 hours)
2. Description of agricultural economic activity. (lecture - 2 hours, practical assignment - 2 hours)
3. Agricultural enterprises. (lecture - 2 hours, practical assignment - 2 hours)
4. Regulatory base regulating the activities of agricultural enterprises. (lecture - 2 hours, practical assignment - 3 hours)
5. Institutional system regulating the activities of agricultural enterprises. (lecture - 2 hours, practical assignment - 3 hours)
6. Industries and management systems in agriculture. (lecture - 2 hours, practical assignment - 2 hours)
7. Support payments in agriculture. (lecture - 2 hours, practical assignment - 2 hours)
8. Production cooperation in agricultural enterprises. (lecture - 2 hours, practical assignment - 2 hours
9. Production planning in an agricultural enterprise. (lecture - 2 hours, practical assignment - 2 hours)
10. Organization of the production process in the crop production sector. (lecture - 3 hours, practical assignment - 3 hours)
11. Organization of the production process in the horticultural sector. (lecture - 3 hours, practical assignment - 3 hours
12. Tillage technologies in crop and horticultural enterprises. (lecture - 2 hours, practical assignment - 2 hours)

13. Organization of the production process in the livestock sector. (lecture - 3 hours, practical assignment - 3 hours)

Requirements for awarding credit points

The mark consists of the following pieces of assessment:
• Examination – all the topics (40 %)
• Test – Agricultural enterprise, the regulatory framework governing the enterprise, the institutional framework governing its activities. Support payments in agriculture.. (15 %)
• Test - Agricultural industries and farming systems.
• Organisation and management of production processes in the crop industry, horticulture and the livestock industry (15 %)
• Study on an agricultural industry (15%)
• Presentation on the study done (10%)
• All the seminar topics (5%)


10% are equal to one point on a 10-point marking scale

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

Preparation for practical assignments, tests and the examination.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

The assessment of the study course depends on the assessment of independent work, tests, and examination – a score of 10 is equal to one point on a 10-point marking scale.
Assignments are assessed in accordance with the assessment procedure established in the assignment.
