Course abstract

During practice students are acquainted with the specificity of a career counselor’s work and the development of a network for co-operation in different organizations, and they prepare for the independent professional activities of a career counselor; they perfect their research knowledge and skills.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Knowledge on the specificity of different organizations in the field of career counseling and the development of a network for co-operation – practice placement visits.
Skills – analysis, interpretation and presentation of experience gained during practice - practice placement visits, preparation of practice reports.
Competences – the students are aware of the research theme and topicality of their Master’s Thesis, field and specificity of activities, and the necessity for perfection of professional skills – practice report, preparation of the practice reports.

Course Content(Calendar)

1. Familiarization of students with a goal and objectives of the practice. Information on organisations to be visited. Requirements for a practice report.
2. A visit to the Career Centre of the University of Latvia.
3. A visit to the State Employment Agency. Activity of the organisation in the field of career.
4. A visit to the Certification Centre of “Latvijas dzelzceļš”.
5. A visit to Siauliai Youth School.
6. A visit to Zemgale Region Career Centre (the work of a career counsellor).
7. Practice defence.

Requirements for awarding credit points

80% out of assessment — for the participation in the activities of practice; 5 % out of assessment — for the report on practice; 10% out of assessment — for the presentation of the results of practice; 5% out of assessment — for the plan of Master’s Thesis.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

Preparation of the practice reports and a presentation.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

The practice is evaluated as successful if a student has attended 3 practice places, prepared a report and presented it according to the defined criteria, as well as provided an insight to the choice of a master’s thesis topic.
