Course abstract

This course teaches and evaluates the use of tools, resources and psychological insights for non-violent conflict resolution through mediation in the work of a teacher and career counsellor. Within the framework of the course students acquire knowledge, skills and competence in mediation as an out-of-court dispute resolution method. Students learn the basic skills of dialogue, communication and conflict resolution so that they can be successfully used both in professional activities and in everyday life. Students will get an insight into peer mediation.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

After completing the course, the student will have:

Course Content(Calendar)

1. Understanding the fundamentals and concepts of mediation. Out-of-institution dispute resolution forms. (3 h)
2. Mediation process stages and phases. Peculiarities of the use of joint and individual sessions (4 h)
3. Dialogue and communication. Negotiation and questioning techniques.(4 h)
4. The role of lawyers, advisers and supporters in the mediation process. The benefits of mediation in conflict resolution and moderation as a mediation tool (1 h).
5. Conflict Theory. Differences in conflict handling methodology (4 h).
First independent work.
6. Emotions in mediation. Extremely emotional conflict handling and analysis (4 h).
7. Communication theories, system theory (3 h)
8. Peer mediation in schools, its accumulation from the transition to the labour market (7 h).
Second independent work.
9. Mediation in Latvia. Cross-border and intercultural mediation (2 h).

Requirements for awarding credit points

75% attendance at lectures, both tasks of independent work are developed.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

First independent work: ability to solve problems in the education sectorto use knowledge in independent and practical work educational institutions, adult education, career counselling and development support, municipalities, social assistance institutions.
Second independent work: ability to analyze conflict situations, apply communicative skills and basic knowledge in non-violent conflict resolution; analyze and evaluate communication barriers, biological, cultural and emotional intelligence aspects.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

The developed independent works conform to the requirements of study course in mediation and communication skills.
