Course abstract

The aim of the course is to provide students with the necessary idea and knowledge about higher education, study process and study environment at the university and faculty, helping to successfully start studies, paying special attention to the development of higher education in the world, Latvia and LLU, study program development, study process organization and student life diversity.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Knowledge: the essence, levels and models of higher education and studies; LLU, Technical Faculty and study program development history; content of the study program and expected study results, organization of the study process. (Lectures and practical works, tests).
Skills: is able to apply the knowledge acquired in the course to ensure a successful study process. (Practical works in TF and Fundamental Library).

Competence: to apply the knowledge acquired in the course to ensure a successful study process, starting the study program (tests, essays) in the evaluation of the basic principles of the study process. Test with a mark.

1. Basics of higher education, higher education in the world, EU, Latvia, LLU and TF. 2 h.
2. History and tendencies of development of higher education and higher engineering education. 2 h, essay.
3. Establishment, development and study offer of LLU. 2 h, test.
4. History of LLU and castle, LLU and castle museums. 3 h, test.
5. Faculty of Engineering, its development and study offer. 1 h.
6. Study normative base, Law on Higher Education Institutions, accreditation and licensing regulations, educ. national standards. 1 h.
7. LLU study normative base, Study regulations, study agreements. 2 h, test.
8. LLU Fundamental Library, search for information in the library. 3 h.
9. LLU research activity, Law on Scientific Activity. 2 h.
10. History of Jelgava, G. Elias Jelgava History and Art Museum. 2h.
11. The essence of the engineering profession and work, types of engineers, the essence of scientific work and the difference from the work of an engineer. 2 h, essay.
12. Systems and their analysis in the work of an engineer, systemic approach in solving engineering problems. 2 h.
13. Study environment at the faculty, study and research laboratories. 3 h.
14. Organization of studies at the faculty, scholarships, student rotation. 2 h.
15. Study works, conditions for their execution and design. 2 h.

Requirements for awarding credit points

Test with a mark - after tests, essay evaluations, class attendance at least 70%.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

Students independently prepare an essay on the choice of studies, first impressions in studies and the profession of an engineer, tests are taken in the e-study system.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

The overall assessment of the test consists of the assessment of the tests and the attendance of classes.
