Course abstract

During the internship, students as observers and employees become as the assistants in the chosen company/design studio/applied arts center/or work for the individual entrepreneur. Students get acquainted with the design process, product development, material and technologies as well as understand the planning and organization of work. They are able to take part in the procurement of materials, make an estimate and assist the internship manager. They gain inspiration and information for choosing the theme of a bachelor's thesis. The internship place is related to the chosen specialty.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Knowledge: Students understand the process of designer's work and the main duties and responsibilities. They understand the importance of communication while working with customers and business partners and are able to create a product presentation. Students know the progress of the project management, they can find optimal ways to solve problems and gain new knowledge in the technological processes of goods.
Skills: Students can carry out their tasks independently or with the participation of the internship manager and they know how to communicate with business partners and customers by fulfilling the tasks. They are able to evaluate the constructive and operational properties of the materials and the possibilities of using the technology efficiently. Students are able to choose the appropriate tools, equipment and materials in the process of product development as well as they can analyse the ways of conceptual solution and product realization possibilities.
Competencies: Skills to work independently or working in groups, ability to communicate and build constructive cooperation. Students can handle design related situations and are able to apply creative methods. They understand the design process and are able to analyze material, technology application and conformity to technical and aesthetic qualities as well as organize product development or design process.

Course Content(Calendar)

Full time intramural studies:
1. Individual work with the practice manager - coordination of the practice program.
2. Research of the specifics of the work of the chosen subspecialty.
3. Assisting a designer / practice manager in the work process.
4. Work and communication with clients and cooperation partners.
5. Analysis of materials and technologies according to technical and aesthetic qualities.
6. Purchase of materials, ordering, preparation of estimates.
7. Product offer analysis and research.
8. Involvement in the creation of a new design product.
9. Conceptual solutions of the idea.
10. Market research and competitiveness assessment.
11. Target audience analysis.
12. Development of idea / product communication.
13. Quality aspects for modern design evaluation.
14. Design project management analysis.
15. Documentation. Detailed presentation of practice tasks in the Practice Diary. Submission of practice diary and report to IMI. Preparation of practice presentation.
16. Applications for starting a bachelor's thesis

Part time extramural studies:

All topics specified for full time studies are accomplished

Requirements for awarding credit points

Regular meetings with the practice manager. Submitting a practice diary to IMI. Successfully evaluated practice report and presentation. Test with a mark.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

Collection and analysis of information about the company's operations, the main target groups and the range of product offers. Quality assessment of the design process.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

The final assessment consists of an evaluation of the practice report, presentation and defense.
