Course abstract

Students acquire classification, physical - mechanical properties, structure, application of construction, tools and special materials. They get to know the theory of alloys, thermal treatment theory and technology. Students acquire knowledge about alloy steels, non - ferrous metals and alloys, non - metals materials, advanced materials and fundamental principles of selection and application the materials.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

1. Knowledge of theoretical and empirical studies in material science- Test nr. I and II;
2. Managing the advantages and disadvantages of metal construction or machining - Test nr. III;
3. Is able to make practical calculations for metal constructions and their costs, as well as knowing material grades to evaluate their mechanical properties and applications - laboratory works;
4. Manages construction materials physically -mechanical properties and structure - Test nr. IV and laboratory works;
5. Is able to decipher the marks of alloy steels and non-ferrous metals and their alloys - Test nr V and laboratory work.
6. Knows non-metallic materials and their use - Test nr VI and laboratory work.

Requirements for awarding credit points

Test type - test with mark. The final test task consists of a test on the theoretical subjects acquired during the study course. All tests, homework must be carried out.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

Preparation for tests. – 36 hours;
Homework No 1. Describe chemical and mechanical properties of given metals (submit an electronic or written version) – 30 hours;
Homework No 2. Draw iron carbon diagram and describe structures (submit an electronic or written version) – 30 hours;

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

Students who have at least assessment 6 in this course of study. The final examination test may not write, and the test rating is compared with the test assessment.
