Course abstract

Students are embracing the effects of different factors on wood quality. Understand the factors leading to changes in the quality of round timber, their storage techniques and protective measures. Identify wood guilt, assess the quality of round timber and learn the methods for determining the volume. Understand the principles of rational tracing of trunks, the breakdown of assortments and the flow of data from the forest owner to the location of the transfer.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

During studies the student will acquire:
• Knowledge of round timber in the assessment of the quality, volume determination methods and storage techniques;(test)
• The skills to identify the wood defects and assess their size, as well as choose the most appropriate method of determining the volume of round timber and storage;(test)
• Competence for the round timber quality and quantity assessment,(test)

Course Content(Calendar)

1. Course content, literature, learning rules. Qualitative breakdown of the tree trunk. Requirements for the preparation of round timber. Regulatory Environment Analysis (2 h Lectures, 2 h Labour work.)
2. Circular timber quality standard. Branch Breakdown and Evaluation (1 h Lectures, 1 h Labour work.)
3. Wet and dry storage techniques, types of loading. Cracks, their origin, their breakdown and valuation (1 h Lectures, 1 h Labour work.)
4. Types of wood raw materials. Fault rating for the shape of the trunk (1 h Lectures, 1h Labour work.)

8. Basic principles for determining the volume of round timber. Harvesting and determination of the value of round timber (1 h Lectures, 2 h Labour work.)
9. Medium and length survey, classification and impact on round timber production and recycling processes (1 h Lectures, 1 h Labour work.)
10. Individual volume measurement techniques (2 h Lectures, 2 h Labour work.)
11. Constants used in the individual volume determination (1 h Lectures, 1 h Labour work.)
12. Determination of group volume. Load volume calculation, weighting the volume factor (1 h Lectures, 1 h Labour work.)
13. Use the mass method in volume assessment (1 h Lectures, 1 h Labour work.) 2. Test

Requirements for awarding credit points

The evaluation of the examination must be performed and defended by the laboratory and have been successfully written for all tests. You can improve your final rating by overwriting one of the tests.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

Analysis of regulatory materials in the field of survey of round timber. Standard analysis of the quality of round timber. Analysis of the BCP procedures. The information is available on the www.lkuuv.lv website

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

2 written tests should be completed during the semester, covering the issues covered by lectures, laboratories, the substance of works, and the materials to be independently studied.
All worked and credited to all practical and laboratory work provided for in the lesson plan, successfully written quizzes, must be completed until the examination has been completed.
Cumulative assessments come from study course quizzes, evaluation of laboratory works, and activities during classes.
The assessment of knowledge, skills and competence takes place on a 10-party scale. A student can obtain a successful check mark in a quiz, exam or check-in if at least 50% of the questions have been answered correctly.
An examination (set-aside) may be omitted if the score of each quiz and colloquium is 6 and higher; the examination shall be treated as the arithmetic mean of the assessments of quizzes, practical works and colloquia.
An examination, including a written examination, without the use of consumables. If an examination, a check mark has failed (3), the total rating of the course has also failed.
Requirements and procedures for completing overdue lessons: Visit to lectures and lessons is required. Delayed and uncredited laboratories and practical works shall be reworked within the time period and in accordance with the procedures specified by the section. Answering or rewriting failed quizzes is given one opportunity at the time specified by the department.
