Course abstract

Project of the drying department for kiln drying of sawn timber, according to the issued individual task.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Knowledge about wood and different wood products drying theory and technology – discussions at lectures, elaboration and defence of course project.
Skills to define and analyse questions regarding wood drying process, manage wood drying process in wood processing companies and evaluate drying quality - discussions at lectures, elaboration and defence of course project.
Competence to evaluate, analyse and develop wood drying technology in wood processing companies - discussions at lectures, elaboration and defence of course project.

Course Content(Calendar)

. Introduction lecture about course project genaral requiremnts and principe – 4 h.
2 Determination of the number and productivity of drying kilns – 2h
3 Elaboration of drying schedules – 6h.
4 Heat engineering calculations – 6h.
5 Heat carrier and fuel quantity calculations – 2h.
6 Determination of the amount of drying agent, drying power, calculation of ventilation ducts and hotplate surface – 4h.
7 Aerodynamic calculations – 4h.
8 Constructive elements of the dryer and drying kiln design – 4h.

Requirements for awarding credit points

Assessment of learning outcomes is done by evaluation of course project.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

Elaboration of course project of wood drying kiln according individual task and containing following calculations:
• technical calculations of the drying kiln;
• thermal calculations;
• aerodynamic calculations;
• fuel consumption calculations;
• calculation of wood drying costs;
• design drawing project of drying kiln.
