Students get knowledge and skills of felting technologies, to understand availability and usage of materials for different works (including recycling) to create new technological solutions in creating innovative products in the study course. Themes included in the programme an linked to felt technologies- wet, dry and Nuno felting.
Study results:
Knowledge: to explain: the structure and versatility of felt technology and design industry; choice of necessary tools and devices for concrete work; technological methods and process of felting; practical solutions of design in creation of modern, new products by choosing suitable multiform materials and potentialities of felting technologies. 1 test.
Skills: to analyze, to evaluate and to be able to use tools, devices and technological methods for work; to have a good knowledge of technological process of felting; to have a good knowledge of materials used in felting and to be able to choose best of them for concrete product, to calculate amount of them and expenses; to discover new technological solutions to create innovative products. Development and defence of laboratory works.
Competence: ability to identify, to know and to choose felting technologies, used materials, to analyze tendences of it’s development and improvement, to be able to use it in work to solve different problems by needs of the client; ability to think creatively and to create independently a long-term product.
1. History of felting development, traditions. Fashion trends in the manufacture of felted products. Felting tools, preparation for work. Felting materials.
2. Colors and traditions. Color spectrum and its coherence to the felting process. Composition and artistic expression in felt products:
• Basic principles of composing (rhythm, symmetry, asymmetry, background, contrast, harmony, main and subordinate element);
• Expression means (dot, line, check, shape, texture, color);
• Basic types of composition (closed, non-closed, edge delimited, linear, geometric, central, growing pattern, mood composition. Stylization).
3. Felting techniques.
• Wet felting.
• Laboratory work (2h): Colored ball, roulette roll.
• Laboratory work (2h): Felting of various flowers.
• Laboratory work (2h): Felting flat objects - tapestry.
• Laboratory work (2h): Felting of large objects using a cut (bags, hats, etc.).
• Dry felting with needles - Laboratory work (4h): fine plastic (balls, hearts, brooches, bracelets, birds, animals, etc.).
• Nuno Felting - Laboratory Work (4h): Wool blending into natural fabrics.
4. Synthesis of techniques and materials at work. Felt product storage.
5. Exhibition of felt products. Exposition. Test 1: Felting tools, materials and techniques.
Excursion. Felt Masterclass.
• 85% participation in lectures and laboratory works.
• Laboratory works and independent work have been developed and presented.
• Successfully written test at the end of the study course.
Independent work (10h) - product development
Develop sketches of product and it’s conceptual solutions in one of the felting techniques, as well as organize and make samples based on market supply and demand.
The assessment of the study course depends on the cumulative assessment of the development of the laboratory work, test and individual work. Laboratory work and independent work shall be evaluated according to the specified evaluation procedure: • Systematic work (max 2.5): realization of the initial idea (0-0.5), during the integration, incl. attendance of classes (0-2.0); • Technical quality of the work (max 4): filling of the laboratory work sheet (0-1), sample execution (0-3); • Color matching, material selection (0-1), • Composition (max 1.5): sample (0-1.5); • Originality (0-1).
