Course abstract

To acquire practical knowledge in planning and managing forestry works within the framework of practice. To acquire practical knowledge about work organization and economic indicators within the practice. To collect and analyze information about the forest sector, forestry organization in order to identify the influencing factors and evaluate their operation. To be able to prepare conclusions about the possibilities and economic significance of industry and company (organization) development

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Students acquire practical knowledge based on the theoretical knowledge acquired (previously during their studies) on the management, planning and performance of the forestry organization's business processes.
Skills – the ability to use the acquired theoretical knowledge and describe the forestry organization and its activities, the ability to evaluate forestry activities in the works of common management principles and decision-making processes on them.
Competences - ability to summarize, analyze and evaluate the economic performance and development indicators of companies (organizations, institutions), the ability to evaluate, record and display data, ability to use available data and provide conclusions, as well as to make suggestions for improvement.

1.Management of the Latvian forest sector. Industry structure. Mutual cooperation. (16h)
2.Strategic management of the forestry organization and general process management. (8h)
3.Strategic management of basic functions. (16h)
4.Management of forestry processes at the tactical and operational level. (8h)
5.Forest management planning, incl. territorial planning. (32h)
6.Silviculture and reforestation, incl. seeds and seedlings. (40h)
7.Production and delivery of wood products. (48h)
8.Forest infrastructure. (32h)
9.Strategic management of other business functions (recreation and hunting, land management, research, etc.). (24h)
10.Use of non-timber forest values. (8h)
11.Forest fire protection, protection and nature protection. (8h)
12.Structure of revenues and costs of the annual plan (budget), their dynamics. (24h)
13.Management of decision-making processes and circulation of documents. (36h)
14.Normative regulation in ensuring the operation of the organization. (28h)
15.Provision of human resources and their competencies. (8h)
16.Summary and evaluation. Practical work (presentation of practice report). (24h)

Requirements for awarding credit points

Practice report preparation, defense and exam.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

Independent work with the management of the overall strategic, tactical and operational processes of the industry and organization, as well as with the results of business operations. Preparation of the practice report in accordance with the methodological instructions of the Forestry Faculty on the development of the final work.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

After completing the professional practice the students obtain practical knowledge based on the acquired theoretical knowledge. The students are able to apply the acquired theoretical knowledge in a forest industry enterprise. They are competent to analyze manufacturing indicators while making decisions for carrying out the required tasks. The final grade is on a 10-point scale.
