Course abstract

Study course allows the understanding of the timber harvesting technology and performance characteristics of the current technical resources and assessment in relation to foreign technology and machinery. It provides information on forest technology development in near and more distant future in Latvia.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

After studying the course the student will:
* Knowledge of logging technology prospective development directions;
* The skills to assess forest technology applications;
* Competence to justify the use of technology options and the expected results.

Course Content(Calendar)

1 Development of mechanized technologies for caring for young plants.
2 Principles of improvement of mechanized technological processes of stocks and other forest management fellings.
3 Principles of forest stand quality evaluation after mechanized care.
4 Selection of technical, technological and economic indicators for evaluation of mechanized maintenance fellings.
5 Development of timber preparation machines in the world.
6 Development trends of assortment harvester construction.
7 Development of automation for harvester technological equipment control.
8 Development of IT tools for optimizing harvester timber surveying and thinning.
9 Timber primary vehicles in difficult teren conditions.
10 Timber primary vehicles for small-scale forestry.
11 Development trends of timber primary transport rolling stock structures.
12 Development trends of energetic wood raw material preparation technology.
13 Design features of wood chippers.
14 Principles of packing chopped wood and possibilities of constructive improvement.
15 Possibilities of application of non-traditional logging technologies in Latvia.
16 Energy efficiency of logging technologies.

Requirements for awarding credit points

Attendance of lectures, participation in seminars, preparation of a report on the possibilities of newly designed techniques in connection with the potential topic of the master's thesis.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

Students independently strengthen their knowledge according to the content of the lectures.
Completion of the tasks of practical work received and started to perform in the classroom classes is allowed during the time provided for independent studies.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

The criterion is the percentage compliance with the 10-point grading scale. The assessment in any of the study results must not be less than 50% of 8 points, or it must be at least 4 points.
