Course abstract

The classification of forest non-wood resources, assessment methods, requirements and constrains for management are introduced to students. Basic principles of planning and management of non-wood forest resources are acquired in practical works.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

1. Knowledge on the basic principles of the classification of non-wood forest resources and principles of monitoring – Test 1.
2. Comprehension on basic principles of harvesting and use of non-wood forest products — Test 2.
3. Ability to analyse information and make appraisals on the various aspects of the use of non-wood forest resources – practical works.
4. Ability to prepare presentations and informative materials on the characteristics and management planning of the various non-wood forest resources, as well as ability to justify a view point - Workshops.

3. Non - wood forest resources and services in Latvia, Europe and the world. (Lecture + Practical work)
4. Forest non-wood resources and their accounting. (Lecture 2h + Practical work)
Test 1
5. Methods for evaluating non-timber forest resources. (Lecture 2h + Practical work)
6. Public awareness on the forest value and calculation methods. (Lecture)
7. Market of non-wood forest resources. (Lecture + Practical work)
8. Sustainable harvesting and use of non-wood forest resources. (Lecture)
Workshop 1 (2h)
9. Management of non-wood forest resources and basic principles for management planning. (Lecture)
10. Environmental protection function. (Lecture)
11. Mitigation of impacts on climate change (CO2). (Lecture + Practical work)
12. Forest aesthetic function - aspects of landscape planning. (Lecture)

Test 2

Requirements for awarding credit points

Visiting contact is mandatory.

During the semester, 2 written tests shall be carried out, the subject of which covers the issues affected by lectures, the practical work themes, and the information to be acquired independently.

All practical works provided in the lesson plan must be worked and credited. Need to participate in the workshops and tests must be successfully written.

Prepare for workshops, tests and practical work according to the study programme.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

The final assessment is cumulative, which is formed from 2 test (each 30 %), practical work (total 30 %) and activity rating in lessons during study course ( total 10 %) assessment.
The assessment of knowledge, skills and competence takes place on a 10-grade scale. A student can get a successful mark in a test, if at least 50% of the questions are answered correctly.
The tests are written, allowing consumables only for practical tasks. If the assessment of the test or practical work is unsuccessful, the final score is also unsuccessful.
Requirements and arrangements for overdue lessons:
A lecture and lesson visit is mandatory. The delayed and uncounted practical works are worked at the time and order specified by Department of Forest utilization.
In case of an unsuccessful test, for oral answering or rewriting is given one option at the time specified by Department of Forest utilization.
