Course abstract

Aim of the study course is to provide students with knowledge about forest mensuration as science that develops methods for forest stand evaluation and observation, area survey and necessary forest management activities by taking into account changes in the forest resources. Study course consists of practical and theoretical parts.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

After study course students will gain knowledge and understanding about forest mensuration and its role in forestry. As a result will acquire skills to independently conduct forest inventory data collection, processing and analysis, allowing to be competent in evaluation of necessary forest management activities.

Course Content(Calendar)

1.Absolute and relative increases of individual tree height, diameter, cross-sectional area and volume, methods of determination- (lecture 2 h, laboratory work 4 h)
2. Methods for determining the percentage increase in volume; their evaluation (lecture 1h, laboratory work 1h)
3. Methods for determining the growth of forest stand stock (lecture 1h, laboratory work 1h)
4. Forest stand growth course: essence, regularities- (lecture 2 h)
5. Increase of additional forest stand stock: influence of anthropogenic activities and natural factors- (lecture 2h)
6. Test 1. Individual tree growths, volume percentage determination methods (laboratory work 1h)
5. Organization of forest territories: quarters, specially protected territories, land categories- (lecture 1h)
6. Taxation methods and accuracy rules (lecture 1 h)
7. Regulations for filling in taxation cards, JSC “LVM GEODS” (lecture 2h, laboratory work 2 h)
8. Forest inventory documents- (lecture 2h)
9. Certification of forest inventory performers, institutions supervising activities- (lecture 1 h, independent work 3 h)
10. Test 2 Taxation documentation and forest inventory regulations (laboratory work 1h)
11. Felling fund, its preparation. felling of logging- (lecture 1h, laboratory work 3h)
12. Felling, felling methods - (lecture 1h)
13. Felling assessment. Checks of felling fund preparation works - (lecture 1h)

Requirements for awarding credit points

Completed laboratory works and 3 tests, test. If the average mark in tests 7 and higher, an automatic credit of the study course is granted

An essay on a topic related to forest taxation issues

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

All laboratory works have been completed, independent work has been submitted, 2 tests have been passed, Exam. Assessment of independent work and tests with 7 and above gives automatic passing of the study course.
