Course abstract

The study course provides knowledge on logging, timber landing and primary transport operations. The general terms, factors affecting, indices for the characterization of logging are to be acquired at first. Technology and the means for mechanization, the technological planning of tree felling area, methods facilitating to meet the labour safety and ecological requirements are considered as well.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Students will get:
• Knowledge about forest operations and timber landings technology.
• Skills will be obtained to compare particular variants of realization of technology from different aspects.
• Attained competence will be sufficient for the assessment of alternative variants.

Course Content(Calendar)

1 Basic concepts and development of logging mechanization and technology.
2 Conditions influencing logging and their characteristics.
3 Indicators used to characterize the logging process and its components.
4 Logging technological process, its types and subdivision.
5 Basic theoretical issues of wood cutting. Sawing as one of the types of cutting. (Test 1).
6 Tree felling classification, operation content and technological rules.
7 Mechanized and mechanized felling of trees: tools and technology.
8 Mechanized and mechanized pruning of trunks: characteristics and technology of tools (Test 2).
9 Timber fattening goal, tasks, optimization criteria.
10 Tools for mechanized and mechanized sawing of timber.
11 Semi-automatic control of fattening, calibration of measuring devices (Test 3).
12 Types of timber primary transport, conditions of their choice.
13 Attachment (trailer) tractor equipment, application technology.
14 Non-mechanized and partially mechanized timber primary transport (Test 4).

Requirements for awarding credit points

The course work must be developed in full, designed in accordance with the existing requirements of the Latvia University of Agriculture, defended and evaluated with a mark.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

Classroom classes are not provided for the course work. All planned tasks according to the course plan (see 1 to 8) must be completed within the time allotted for independent studies.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

The criterion is the percentage compliance with the 10-point grading scale. The assessment in any of the study results must not be less than 50% of 8 points, or it must be at least 4 points.
