Course abstract

Study course "Fundamentals of Design and Product Registration" examines issues of concepts, history, develop, trends and diversity of design and the synthesis of creative industries such as art, culture, design, business and technology. It offers comprehension of traditional and innovative design. It analyses the concept of sustainable development of design and application of eco-innovations, examine and analyze designs, products. It offers an insight into work of Latvian and foreign designers and the analysis of current situation in design; it discusses design as communication. The course clarifies the main concepts of IPR protection, and unregistered and registered intellectual property rights. It explains laws of trade mark and design registration and the methods of classification and search.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Knowledge:
After the course a student knows the theory of design building, types and functions, history of design, understands the role of intellectual property protection of a new creation. Knows the product development process from the perspective of entrepreneurs. Knows design creation approaches. Knows the quality aspects of modern design evaluation. He/she knows the law of trademarks and industrial designs protection of IPR. Practical work, tests and presentations are evaluated.
Skills: A student knows how to develop and analyze design samples, products, development concept, can search the Internet for trademarks and designs in a variety of information sources. Practical work, tests and presentations are evaluated.
Competencies:
Students are able to use knowledge, skills and making product design methods in professional work and development; are able to use the acquired professional knowledge and skills to design a new product registration. Practical work, tests and presentations are evaluated.

Full time intramural studies:
1. The concept of design, its functions (aesthetically symbolic, technical and practical). Design history and styles. Reflection of design history in art history. Lecture1h
2. Diversity of design. types of design: interior design, fashion design, industrial design, universal design, etc. Design, product, complex product. Lecture 1h
3. Creative industries. Synthesis of art, culture, design, business and technology, use of human resources potential. Lecture. 1h
4. Design, art, crafts. Insight into the work of the most visible world and Latvian designers. Product design analysis. Understanding of traditional and new design. Goodwill. The concept of sustainable development, sustainable design, eco-design - the path to sustainable development innovation. Ethical design. Lecture 1h
5. Areas of design. Identity, differentiation. Creating a portfolio of works. Lecture 1h
6. Team work (designer's cooperation with other specialists, based on various professions and competencies in the production process chain) to achieve optimal results in product and packaging development. Lecture 1h
7. Design and product development process from the perspective of entrepreneurs. The role of design in the development of packaging. The most important features and development trends of packaging design. Materials reuse, recycling. Design product. Product design and its development process, stages. Lecture 1h

All topics specified for full time studies are accomplished, but the number of contact hours is one half of the number specified in the calendar

Requirements for awarding credit points

Successfully evaluated practical works and presentations, design product design for registration, its presentation, test.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

Development of a new design concept, market analysis, target audience selection and research of material and technology application possibilities. Creation of a presentation board and prototype development. Product design analysis and research. Product design inspiration tablet A2. Presentation 20 slides. Portfolio, sketchpad. The work started in the lesson is completed independently. Design product presentation for registration and presentation preparation.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

Individual work and presentation evaluation, tests, quizzes.
Criteria:
1. task requirements 2 points;
2. creativity, creative and innovative solutions 2 points;
3. the technical solution, work culture 2 points;
4. compositional solution 2 points;
5. the research carried out 2 points.

Compliance with regulatory requirements for the design of the sample presentation.
