Course abstract

Professional practice gives an opportunity to strengthen the acquired theoretical knowledge practically in selected specialty. For professional practice, students can choose the following directions: fruit production, vegetable production, ornamental plants, nurseries, floriculture, beekeeping, plant protection in horticulture.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

• knowledge of technological processes, management and organizational principles, plant assortment and cultivars, agrotechnical properties, as well as knowledge about farm’s place in business environment, cooperatives, current market situation and agricultural organisations – final report;
• skills to provide plant production in spite of soil and climate conditions, identify and assess the dissemination of harmful organisms, to choose right growing technologies – collections (infected plant herbarium, pests and its damaged plant herbarium, vegetable seeds, fruit seeds, ornamental plants` herbarium);
• competence in the planning of growing technologies in horticulture, farm management in cooperation with the coordinator – presentation of the final report and involvement in the discussion during the defense.

Course Content(Calendar)

15 weeks - practice in the farm / enterprise / state institution for introduction in the following topics:
1. Specialization and characterization of farm / enterprise / state institution
2. Characterization of production industry
3. Description of plant assortment and cultivated species
4. Characterization of agro-meteorological and agro-ecological conditions related to production specialization. Characterization of farm soils, drainage
5. Description of agrotechnics used in the farm
6. Technological characteristics of production
7. Agrochemistry
8. Plant protection system
9. Processing and marketing of production. Logistics
10. Resources and conditions for farm`s potential growth and development
11. Cooperation partners. Farm involvement in agricultural organizations, cooperatives, etc.
12. Use of national and EU support funds, opportunities and challenges
13. Economic activity and environment
14. Work environment and people safety
15. Risk control measures
The interim report should be submitted at the time tagged by coordinator.

Requirements for awarding credit points

Evaluation of practice – score is formed from the final report (score) and from the presentation of final report (score). All collections must be submitted. Timely submission of interim report, final report and practice supervisor’s feedback.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

All collections (infected plant herbarium, pests and its damaged plant herbarium, vegetable seeds, fruit seeds, herbarium) should be managed according to the rules.
Interim report must be submitted on e-studies. Final report preface at first must be submitted on e-studies and after positive assessment printed version of the final report must be handed in.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

The score of final report depends on the quality and submission time of the necessary collections (points) and interim report (points).
If number of points not exceed 4 – the final grade cannot be higher than 7.
1 point: interim report not submitted on time, the quality does not comply with rules, collections not submitted on time, the quality does not comply with rules;
2 points: interim report submitted on time, the quality does not comply with rules; collections submitted on time, the quality does not comply with rules;
3 points: interim report submitted on time, the quality comply with rules; collections submitted on time, the quality comply with rules.

Notes

For students of professional Bachelor Study Programme „Agriculture” with specialization in horticulture of the Faculty of Agriculture, for full time students in 4th year 7th semester and for partial time students in 5th year 9th semester.
