Course abstract

Master Students are gaining knowledge about farm animal origins and base phases of ontogenesis, breed selection principles, productivity traits, and their evaluation and affecting factors. Farm animal breeding methods, and importance of selection work. Get familiar with functions of nutrients in animal feed and basic planning principles of feed rations as well as the build of digestive system for different animal species.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

•Master students will obtain deepened knowledge about farm animal domestication, biological traits, breeding and selection methods and the factors affecting quality of production. Students will acquire knowledge about farm animal nutrition, feed rationing and its effective use. (Tests, results of practical works).
•Master students are skilled to use suitable breeding methods for different species and breed animals. Understand role of selection in the breeds’ development. Students will have skill to plan feed ration and economic usage of feed. (positive evaluation of practical works, preparation of presentations) •In the result students are competent to do manufacturing, research or consulting work, to analyse animal productivity and the factors affecting it, study scientific and other literature, discuss and justify taken decisions (Tests, presentations, exam)

Requirements for awarding credit points

The study course consists of two parts: animal breeding (1.-8.) and animal nutrition (9.-15.). The attendance to lectures is recommended, to practical work – mandatory. Passed tests, completed and positively evaluated practical works. Written exam about topics, covered during lectures.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

During semester student individually studies literature, prepares for exam. Student prepares 2 papers about animal breeding and feeding topics by using results from scientific papers. Time for presentation 10 – 12 minutes. If necessary, student has possibilities to use office hours.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

The evaluation of exam depends on responses in written exam and accumulative grade from tests and individual work. Tests and papers are graded in 10 point scale. Grade is calculated as mean average from all grades received in each parts of study course.
