Course abstract

Students get acquainted with the processing of crude oil. They obtain knowledge about fuel specifications, standards and use, the burning of fuel in Otto and diesel-motors, determination of octane and cetane number. Students acquire the lubricants’ classification system in the world (SAE, API, ACEA, ISO, NLGI), as well as the choice principles of lubricants.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

• Acquires expertise in oil extraction and processing, classification of motor fuels, their standards and use, fuel burning in Otto and diesel engines – Test No. 1
• Acquires skills in determining octane and cetane numbers and using oil classification systems worldwide – laboratory works
• Capable of selecting motor oils, transmission oils, industrial oils and ointments for the equipment concerned – Test No. 2
