Course abstract

The study course will give for students the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the growth and development characteristics of different animal species, classification of livestock breeds, body constitution, productivity traits, breeding methods, animal selection and its importance in animal breeding. Students will acquire knowledge about feed nutrients and their role in nutrition, feedstuffs and their quality, their role in production and provision of health as well as about principles of forming balanced and economically justifiable feed ration for different species, age and productivity level livestock

Learning outcomes and their assessment

After completion of study course, students will acquire:
• knowledge about classification of different livestock breeds, speed and intensity of growth, different types of constitution and methods of body conformation trait evaluation as well as the effect of body conformation traits on livestock productivity traits, students will find out about role of selection work in animal husbandries effectivity increase. Students will acquire knowledge role of nutrients in livestock ration, production and norming of feed ration (developed and defended practical works, passed tests and exam about theoretical course)
• skill to evaluate growing peculiarities of different animal species, productivity level, understand livestock selection principles and importance of animal breeding as well as to choose more suitable feedstuff for specific animal species and plan feed ration depending on animal productivity level (developed practical works, passed test).
• competence choose livestock species and breeds suitable for farms direction and housing technologies, plan balanced feeding and to use obtained knowledge for development of term papers and bachelors thesis. (passed tests and passed theoretical exam)

1. Connection of animal husbandry sector with other agricultural branches, animal breeding legislative basis. Lectures 2h, practical works 1h.
2. Classification of livestock breeds. Evaluation of animal quantitative and qualitative traits. Lectures 2h, practical works 2 h.
3. Types of livestock constitution, evaluation methods of dairy cow body conformation traits. Lectures 2h, practical works 2 h.
4. Animal breeding, its role in productivity increase in livestock sector. Breeding programs, their aims and tasks. Lectures 2h, practical works2 h.
5. Productivity traits of dairy cows and goats. Productivity evaluation methods and analysis. Lectures 2h, practical works 3 h.
6. Beef production traits. Production, evaluation and analysis of beef and pork. Lectures 2h, practical works 2h..
7. Selection principles in animal husbandry. Lectures 2h, practical works 2 h.
8. Breeding methods in animal husbandry. Pure breeding and crossbreeding. Lectures 2h, practical works2 h.
Test. Practical work problem solving. 2h.
9. Feed dry matter as a criterion for rationing in animal nutrition. The role of water in animal nutrition. Lecture 2h, practical works2 h.
10. The importance of protein in animal nutrition. The main sources of degraded intake protein (DIP) and undegraded intake protein (UIP) supply to animals. Lecture 2h, practical works2 h.
11. The role of carbohydrates (sugars, starch, crude fiber and its fractions) in animal nutrition. Lecture 2h, practical works2 h.
12. Importance of crude fats and sources of supply in animal feed. Lecture 2h, practical works2 h.
13. Minerals and vitamins, their characterization and provision in animal nutrition. Lecture 2h, practical works2 h.
Test I
14. Classification of forage, zootechnical and economic characteristics for the establishment of feed rations for different animal species. Lecture 2h, practical works2 h.
15. Quality and characteristics of forage (raughage and succulent) in animal nutrition. Lecture 2h, practical works2 h.
16. Fodder, food by-products and feed additives its characterization and role in providing animal nutrition, range of offers and prices. Lecture 2h, practical works2 h.
Test II

Requirements for awarding credit points

The study course consists of two parts: animal breeding (1.-8.) and animal nutrition (9.-16.). Recommended attendance to lectures, mandatory attendance to practical works. Passed tests, developed and positively graded practical works. Written exam about topics, covered during course.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

During semester student individually studies literature, prepares for tests, if necessary, uses office hours.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

Evaluation in the course is possible obtain only when are developed and passed all practical works, passed all 3 tests. Written exam.
Summed grade is calculated as mean average from animal breeding and animal feeding test results.
