Course abstract

The course introduces students to the substance, subjects, objects and system of international law. The course is designed to build an understanding of international contract law and the stages of conclusion of an international agreement and to analyse the subjects and forms of international legal liability. The course discusses legal remedies for international disputes. The course provides an introduction to international private law and familiarises students with the procedure for the conclusion of an international contract of sale of goods.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Students will be able to demonstrate:
KNOWLEDGE of
1. The substance of international contractual law, the stages and procedure of conclusion of international contracts. Test.
2. The substance, subjects and forms of international legal liability. Test.
3. The procedure of conclusion of an international contract of sale. Test.

1. Independently classify international contracts, discuss the stages and procedure of conclusion of international contracts. Practical assignments.

Requirements for awarding credit points

All the tests have to be taken and all the independent assignments have to be submitted; at least 80% of the classes have to be attended. All the tests and independent assignments have to have a pass mark.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

Homework 1. Concept and kinds of international contracts. Solution of a case.
Homework 2. Procedure of conclusion of international contracts in accordance with international public law. Solution of a case.
Homework 3. Procedure of conclusion of international contracts in accordance with international private law. Solution of a case.

Homework 4. International legal liability. Solution of a case.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

The assessment of students’ learning outcomes is done by means of four tests, resulting in a cumulative mark. The weight of Tests 1 and 3 is 20% each, while that of Tests 2 and 4 is 30% each. The maximum cumulative score is 100%. 10% are equal to one point on a 10-point marking scale.
