Course abstract

The course aims to impart the general basics of main branches of law and legal theory.
The course gives a general insight into the basic matters of law and legislation that are necessary for an individual in the life, professional career, communication with other members of society for various socio-economic purposes. Students gain knowledge of and skills in labour law and civil law. The course helps students understand problems pertaining to ownership law and obligations law as well as family law and inheritance law and deal with various legal and regulatory enactments and legal literature.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Knowledge:
Students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate the knowledge and understanding of the most important basic concepts and terms of law – Test
2. Demonstrate the understanding of the most important concepts and regularities of family law and inheritance law – Test
3. Demonstrate the knowledge of basic concepts and terms of property law – Test
4. Demonstrate the knowledge of obligations law, the origin, enforcement and termination of obligations – Independent work
5. Demonstrate the knowledge and understanding of the basic concepts and terms of labour law – Test
Skills:
1. Independently select legal enactments and find solutions to problems – Educational game
2. Independently make decisions and demonstrate close familiarity with theoretical aspects of family law and inheritance law for solving issues – Independent work
3. Solve legal matters, having close familiarity with the property law framework – Independent work
4. Independently identify civil law contracts, their subject matters and components – Independent work
5. Demonstrate close familiarity with the labour law framework and solve legal issues – Independent work
6. Work individually and in groups, make decisions, take responsibility, demonstrate organizational skills – Discussions in classes

Competence:
1. Critically analyse situations, take part in interpreting legal provisions and drafting laws during the learning process – Test, practical assignments, an examination
2. Critically analyse legal situations regarding family and inheritance law, as well as come up with and interpret creative ideas for amending the legal framework – Test, practical assignments, an examination
3. Independently identify obligation contracts and analyse the legal relations arising from the contracts – Test, practical assignments, an examination
Critically analyse legal situations concerning labour law, generate new ideas for amending the legal framework – Group work

Course Content(Calendar)

Full-time studies:
Lectures:
1. Legal system.
2. Creation of legal provisions, the stages of legislation, the problems in Latvia.
3. Concept of civil relationship. Legal entities and subject-matters of civil law.
4. Family law.
5. Inheritance law.
6. Property law.
7. Obligations law.
8. Liabilities arising from causing damage.
9. Labour law.
10. Working and rest time.
11. Remuneration.
12. Working procedures.
13. Labour disputes.

Practicals:
1. Concept, emergence, composition, classification, system and understanding of legal provisions (1 hour).
2. Test 1 (1 hour).
3. Family and inheritance law (1 hour).
4. Spousal property relations, marriage contracts, the division of spousal property (4 hours).
5. Test 2 (1 hour).
6. Possession: the concept and kinds of possession (2 hours).
7. Concept of property. Kinds of property. Intellectual property. Property as a right of power over a thing. Restrictions on ownership rights. Restrictions applying to the property in its entirety. Pre-emption rights. Restrictions on the right to alienate property. Restrictions on the right to use property (4 hours).
8. Establishment and termination of servitudes (2 hours).
9. Legal transactions. The concept, kinds and procedure of conclusion of a contract, a lack of will in legal transactions (4 hours).
10. Ways of enforcing obligations law (1 hour).
11. Test 3, (1 hour).
12. Kinds of civil law contracts (gift, purchase, maintenance, rental, lease etc. contracts) (4 hours).
13. Purchase, lease and rental contracts (2 hours).
14. Labour law: termination by the employer. Procedure for terminating an employment contract (2 hours).
15. Test 4 (2 hours).
Part-time extramural studies:
All the topics intended for full-time studies are covered, yet the number of contact hours is ½ of the specified number of hours.

Requirements for awarding credit points

The student must pass 4 tests on the topics covered, participate in educational games and in group work. The student must complete the assignments given in practicals, as well as pass an examination.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

The student must independently study the basics of law and some branches of law as well as theoretical matters, preparing for tests and an examination.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

The final mark represents a cumulative assessment of 4 tests and an examination: Test 1 – 20%, Test 2 – 10%, Test 3 – 15%, Test 4 – 15% and an examination – 40%.
