Course abstract

Study course includes wastewater management including domestic, industrial, storm water and agricultural wastewater. Will be theoretically obtained different wastewater treatment methods and students will practically approach the urgent wastewater treatment methods in Latvia. Sewage system technical designing will be studied during this study course.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Study course will give
• knowledge of wastewater sources and amount and biochemical treatment principles of different wastewater treatment plants.
• Students will have a skills to adapt a wastewater treatment method and a discharge system suitable for current object. Students will be able to prepare a documentation of technical designs.
• Student will be competent to defend their solution in standard and specific cases, offering the most environmentally friendly, sustainable and economically viable option.

Requirements for awarding credit points

Independently developed technical project and successfully written final test on the lecture topics.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

Students attend to lectures and obtain the theoretical course of topics mentioned in a course plan. Themes of the theoretical course are distributed evenly through the semester. Students are asked to individually organise their studies for the final exam, using the sources of literature and recommendations of the teaching staff. The final exam contains 30 questions in a form of test. Three possible answers to each question are offered and only one answer is correct for each question.
Students are asked to independently develop a domestic sewage project. The consultations are available during the semester. The base material including topographical plan, ground composition, person equivalent, ects. for the project is offered by the teaching staff. The project is developed according to the technical project quality assurance requirements in Latvia, at the appropriate level of detailing, including designing in horizontal and vertical scale. The explanatory memorandum includes a description of the technical information of the project, calculations, and also solves the issue of wastewater treatment assurance.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

Student theoretical knowledge is evaluated after the final examination. The exam is passed if 50% of answers are marked correctly.
The final grade consists of the average mark for the final test and the grade for the domestic sewage project developed during the semester.
