Course abstract

Students acquire knowledge of the history and contemporary problems of philosophy, develop anderstanding of the main ethical and aesthetical categories. The course promotes skills in analysing philosophical and ethical issues as well as discussion culture. In addition to lectures the course includes discussions in seminars, group work and presentations of students' papers.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

• Knowledge: to develop understanding of the main historical periods of ethics, aesthetics and philosophy; to acquire knowledge of the main paradigms, philosophical ideas and conceptions, including conceptions of human nature and values.
• Skills: to understand problems in wider contexts; to develop critical thinking and ability to make independent and sound judgements; skills of listening, dialogue and communication.
• Competence - to evaluate the relationship between the individual and society in the context of current affairs and the chosen speciality.
