Course abstract

The course includes the design, operation and choice of building heating systems and their component parts as heat generators, pumps, pipes, safety and instalation elements. Electric heating systems, heating with gas heaters, heated floors with water pipes and electric heating cables, heating with hot air are acquired. The design of up-to-date heating systems, control principles and it's components are analysed.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Knowledges: knows types of building heating systems and the design and operational principles of their elements, selection criteria, systems management principles – tests 1 and 2;
Abilities: calculation of the parameters for the elements of the heating system, making their reasonable choices, assessing their suitability for the site: test 1 and 2;
Competences: calculation and selection of the the heating system type and its elements suitable for a given object, assessment of the operation and control of the heating system, development of improvement solutions - tests 1 and 2.

Course plan

1. Building water heating systems, classification, their schemes, construction principles.
2. Water heating system elements: pipelines, their characteristics, selection, instalation - 2 h
3. Water heating system components: air-bleeding, safety devices.
4. Compensation for thermal expansion of heat carrier. Extension tanks.
5. Water heating system elements: circulation pumps, their characteristics, calculation of parameters, selection.
Practical works. Hydraulic calculation of water heating system elements – 2 h.
6. Room heaters of water heating systems – 2 h
Practical works. Calculation of heat loss for space and building. Heater selection – 4 h.
7. Heat generators for heating systems – 3 h.
Test 1. Water heating systems and elements.
8. Building air heating systems.
9. Building electrical heating systems and appliances.
10. Heating with gas burners.
11. Steam heating systems.
12. Heating systems with floor-mounted heat holes.
13. Heating systems with floor-mounted heating cables.
14. Types of heat pumps, their use in heating systems – 2 h.
15. Heating system controls: heating regulators, valves. Heat recording – 3 h.
16. Concept and principles for the development of a modern heating system – 4 h.
Test 2. Alternatives to water heating systems and control of heating systems.

Requirements for awarding credit points

Credit with mark.
Both tests have to be credited. Attendance of classes at least 75% of the total.

The mark depends on the score obtained in both tests.
