Ener3027, Fundamentals of Heat Studies I

Course abstract

The aim of the study course is to get knowledge about properties, composition, use of solid, liquid and gas fuels. During studies, the basics of combustion theory, methods of combustion and techniques are being acquired. Students get skills to calculate the heat amount, parameters of flue gasses and combustion processes, to choose draught equipment. They obtain knowledge and understanding of combustion process organization and equipment, and it’s component parts: burners, furnaces, those design, parameters, ash removing.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Knowledge - types of primary energy resources (fuels), their characteristics, composition, parameters, combustion processes, factors affecting them, the combustion organization of different fuels and equipment - examination
Skills - analysis and calculation of combustion processes, assessment of losses in the heat production process in equipment – test, assess the suitability of the fuel concerned for a particular installation, the quality of its combustion organization - examination;

Competence - evaluating the operation of combustion plants and making recommendations to improve it; assessing the eligibility of used fuels to economic, ecological and comfort criteria - examination.

Part time extramural studies:

All topics specified for full time studies are accomplished, but the number of contact hours is one half of the number specified in the calendar

Requirements for awarding credit points

A written exam.
The exam consists of three questions:
1. fuels, their characteristics;
2. Combustion processes and factors affecting them;
3. Equipment and appliances for the combustion of fuels and the production of heat energy.

The student shall be admitted to the examination only if the test has been credited.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

Students independently prepare for exams and tests.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

The assessment of the study course examination shall consist of the sum of the number of points obtained for each examination question answer:
- the correct comprehensive, broad answer: 3 points,
- a correct answer with small incompleteness or small errors: 2 points,
- a reply containing only basic concepts without explanations or containing essential errors: 1 point,
- there is no answer, the answer is wrong, there are very serious errors in the answer: 0 points.

By getting 9 points, there is the possibility of conducting interviews that result in a 10 – excellent mark, being obtained by the student showing the appropriate knowledge and understanding.
