Course abstract

The course provides knowledge of tourism economics in the global and national contexts. The course encompasses such issues as the role of tourism and its significance in the economy, the classification of tourism as well as tourism resources, tourism micro- and macroeconomics, tourism products and problems of and prospects for the tourism industry.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Students will be able to demonstrate:
Knowledge
An in-depth and profound knowledge and understanding of tourism as an industry of the national economy and its multiplier effect at the macro-level. Test.
Professional skills to do research and, using problem-solving skills, justify an assessment of tourism efficiency and substantiate the behavioural patterns of business entities in unexpected situations and under exceptional circumstances. Group work.
Soft skills to develop social interaction, cooperation and organisational skills needed for tourism business. Discussions and debates.

Competence to independently formulate and critically analyse complicated problems in the tourism economy, justify decisions, integrate the knowledge of economics and other fields, contribute to a new knowledge, demonstrate an understanding of moral responsibility for the potential environmental and social impacts of tourism.

2. Tourism organizations (1h lecture).
3. Tourism resources (1h lecture, 1h practical).
4. Macroeconomic aspects of tourism (1h lecture, 3h practicals).
5. Tourist destinations (1h lecture).
6. Microeconomic aspects of tourism (1h lecture, 2h practicals).
7. Tourism products (1h lecture, 1h practical).
8. Tourism classification (1h lecture).
9. Cooperation systems in tourism and research thereon (1h lecture, 2h practicals).
10. Tourism environment (1h lecture).
11. Tourism marketing (1h lecture, 1h practical).

12. Problems in and prospects for tourism economy development (1h lecture, 1h practical).

Requirements for awarding credit points

The student must pass two tests, do independent work and participate in group work. The course ends with a formal test with a mark.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

In the group work, the student must create a new tourism product, taking into account the informed demand for it as well as independently come up with examples of tourism based on the classification and assess the cooperation systems.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

The tests and the independent work comprise 70%, and the formal test with a mark makes up 30% of the total assessment.
