Course abstract

Developing a study project, the student shall consolidate, systematically and extend the theoretical knowledge acquired in the courses of Financial Accounting, Statistics and Corporate Finance. The student learns to describe, detect and evaluate theoretical and legal aspects of the subject, perform financial accounting studies of the company, acquire skills in the collection and processing of statistical information, as well as in the financial analysis of the company, draws independent conclusions and formulates proposals for solving identified problems.

Course Content(Calendar)

1. Choice of theme, its justification. The student independently chooses the topic from the list of offered topic directions. The topic is then concretized with the study project leader.
2. Defining the aim, tasks and content of the study project. In cooperation with the project manager, the project objective is defined, tasks defined and the structure of the project is developed according to the overall plan of the study project. In the introduction (1-2 pages) the topicality of the project theme should be justified. Based on the topicality of the topic, the aim of the work should be formulated. There is only one goal in the thesis and its wording should be as short and specific as possible to the chosen topic. The progress of the research objective is revealed by the tasks to be performed. Tasks are defined methodological activities that are subordinate to the purpose of the work and reflect the progress of its achievement. The tasks reflect the content of the work. The introduction should describe the subject and period of the study, and describe the structure and scope of the project.
3. Choice of research methods. Research methods are tools for implementing work tasks. Therefore, the introduction of the thesis should indicate which methods the author will use in the given research.
4. Establishment of the working structure. The student should establish the structure of the study project, indicating the major departments. There may be a separate chapter for each task. The recommended volume for the main part of the work (theoretical and practical part) - 93% of the work. Attachments do not make up the amount of work.
5. Compilation, systematization and discussion of theoretical literature. The student should summarize the theoretical knowledge acquired in different study courses necessary for the development of the study project and use it as a basis for the development of the analytical part of the project. The sources of the research are the latest basic scientific research, laws of the Republic of Latvia, Cabinet of Ministers regulations, special and general literature, publications in internationally quoted collections of articles and periodicals, official statistical data, materials published by ministries. At least 5 sources must be in a foreign language. The student has to form a theoretical discussion, summarizing the opinions and opinions of different authors about the particular accounting object and expressing his / her evaluation. The student must give reasons for his / her point of view.
6. Research. The practical part is to perform statistical data processing and financial analysis of the company. It is advisable to use company-specific data for statistics and financial analysis, at least over the past 3 years. If the available enterprise data are not sufficient for analysis, statistical data on the sector or country as a whole shall be used. The results of the study should preferably be summarized in tables and figures. The student has to make independent conclusions about the collected statistical data, the information contained therein, as well as the established tendencies and regularities.
7. Drawing conclusions. Conclusions are the concluding part of the thesis, which covers all the contents of the thesis. Conclusions must be directly related to the purpose and tasks of the work. The conclusions should reflect the key findings from the research and work content. The conclusions are based on important data and facts mentioned in the paper. The conclusions should also show the author's contribution to the study of the problem, the novelty gained and the practical significance.
8. Drafting of proposals. Proposals must be based on research and conclusions drawn from the work. The proposal cannot be a quotation from the works of other authors. The proposal must be substantiated and addressed to the specific practitioner.
9. Creating a list of references. The list of literature used shall be drawn up in accordance with the requirements of the ESAF Methodological Regulations. Literature used is a list of all the books, articles, texts and other information to which the work refers.

10. Compilation of Annexes. Attachments do not make up the amount of work. Attachments shall include documents and information when they are too long to be included in the body. Financial data is presented in aggregate tables created by the student himself / herself, rather than adding copied components of a company's financial statements. Attachments are numbered and referenced throughout the text.

Requirements for awarding credit points

The study project must be defended by the teaching staff commission of the Institute of Finance and Accounting. A Power Point presentation should be prepared in 10 minutes to defend the study project. The presentation includes the purpose of the work, tasks, topicality of the topic and the most important results of the research as well as conclusions and suggestions. Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

The development, management, submission and defense of the study project is governed by the Methodological Guidelines for the Development and Defense of the Study Project. Study aid for students of the academic bachelor study program “Economics” of the Faculty of Economics and Social Development.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

The study project is evaluated by the commission, evaluates the content of the thesis, the student's ability to present his / her research and answer the questions asked. The study project is evaluated in 10 point system. The study project is defended if all members of the commission give a successful evaluation of the work. In case of unsuccessful evaluation, the project must be improved and defended within the time limit set by the commission.
