Course abstract

The course provides students with knowledge of the nature and methods of enterprise strategic management. Applying various worldwide popular methods and models of strategic planning, students will learn how to practically apply strategic management in order to perform a strategic analysis of the performance of an enterprise as well as do strategic planning and strategic management for the enterprise.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Students will be able to:
- Demonstrate the knowledge and understanding of the nature and concepts of strategic management – discussions in classes;
- Demonstrate the knowledge and understanding of instruments for strategy implementation - discussions in classes;
- Demonstrate the knowledge of how to apply portfolio analysis for enterprises - practical assignments;
- Independently perform an assessment of the internal and external environments of an enterprise - practical assignments, group work, independent work;
- Independently analyse the elements of a value chain for an enterprise - discussions in classes, practical assignments, independent work;
- Responsibly plan the completion of the assignments given - group work, independent assignments;
- Engage in team work, express and argue their opinions - group work;
- Present a plan developed and analysis results – presentation;
- Competence in analysing competitive advantages – an examination;
- Competence in drawing up strategic plans - practical assignments, independent assignments, an examination;

- Competence in designing and applying a balanced scorecard system (plan) - practical assignments, a test, an examination.

Course Content(Calendar)

1. The essence and necessity of strategy and strategic management. Strategic management process (lecture - 3 hours).
2. Analysis of the company's situation. Research and analysis of the company's strategic alternatives (lecture - 4 hours, practical - 3 hours).
3. Strategic planning at the functional, business and corporate level (lecture - 3 hours, practical - 2 hours).
4. Analysis of competitors. Competitive strategy. Sustainable competitiveness (lecture - 3 hours, practical - 2 hours).
5. Company Portfolio analysis (lecture - 2 hours, practical - 1 hour).
6. Strategic analysis of "product-market" (lecture - 3 hours, practical - 1 hour).
7. Strategic management models at the corporate level (lecture - 2 hours, practical - 1 hour).
8. Strategic plan, its implementation, control and evaluation (lecture - 4 hours, practical - 1 hour)
9. Strategy for competition in international markets (lecture - 2 hours, practical - 1 hour).
10. Balanced scorecard management (lecture - 4 hours, practical - 2 hours).
11. Test (practical - 1 hour)

12. Presentations (practical - 3 hours)

Requirements for awarding credit points

At the end of the course students has to pass an examination on the topics acquired during the study course.
During the study course students have to pass test.
The evaluation of study course consists of:
Test - 5 points;
Independent work - 20 points;
Practical classes - 20 points;
Discussion in classes - 5 points;
Independent work presentation - 10 points;
Exam - 40 points.

The student must develop an independent work - a strategic analysis of the company "X", presenting it. Presentation duration - up to 10 minutes.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

The evaluation of study course consists of:
Test - 5 points;
Independent work - 20 points;
Practical - 20 points;
Discussion in classes - 5 points;
Independent work presentation - 10 points;
Exam - 40 points.

The student must develop an independent work - a strategic analysis of the company "X", presenting it. Presentation duration - up to 10 minutes.
A score of 10 is equal to one point on a 10-point marking scale.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

The assessment of the study course depends on the assessment of independent work, essay, tests and examination – a score of 10 is equal to one point on a 10-point marking scale.
Assignments are assessed in accordance with the assessment procedure established in the assignment.
The evaluation of study course consists of:
Test - 5 points;
Independent work - 20 points;
Practical - 20 points;
Discussion in classes - 5 points;
Independent work presentation - 10 points;
Exam - 40 points.
