Course abstract

The study project aims to integrate theoretical knowledge into practical research on topical legal problems. Students will analyse basic legal problems in the legal aspect and make independent conclusions and proposals on problems regarding the enforcement of legal provisions in Latvia.

Course Content(Calendar)

1. Selection of a topic in Law, the justification thereof, the definition of the research problem to be studied.
2. Definition of the research aim and tasks of the study project (formulation of the research question).
3. Creation of the structure of the study project.
4. Selection of the research methods to be used.
5. Theoretical framework for the topic.
6. Empirical research on the topic.
7. Development of conclusions and proposals.
8. Creation of a list of references.
9. Compilation of annexes.
10. Layout and formatting requirements for and submission of the study project.
11. Defence of the study project.

12. Assessment of the study project.

Requirements for awarding credit points

A topic relevant to Law is selected, the study project on the topic is produced and submitted to the EKRA Institute in a timely manner. The study project is produced and presented in accordance with the Guidelines for Writing and Defending a Study Project of the ESAF Faculty. The study project and the research done must be presented and defended before a committee appointed by the EKRA Institute.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

The study project is produced independently in consultation with the supervisor appointed by the EKRA Institute. The tasks to be accomplished while working on the study project: the selection of a topic; a review of literature, including scientific literature; research on the topic chosen; writing the study project; the preparation of a presentation; the defence before a committee.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

The study project is read by the supervisor and s/he writes a review for the committee. The study project, the presentation and defence of the study project are evaluated by the committee of EKRA teaching personnel, usually with the participation of the supervisor. The study project is assessed on a 10-point marking scale.
