Course abstract

Students become acquainted International and Latvian labour protection and emergences conventions, rules and regulations; Labour safety training order; labour environment supervision and inspection; electrosafety, fire safety; emergency situations in Latvia (risk awareness, preventive measures, preparation, response, elemination of consequences); people duties, rights, beheviour and protection in emergency situations.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

After completing the course student will have:
• Knowledge and critical understanding of the role and place of labour safety and civil protection in the work process of organizations and companies.
• Skills of creating a civil protection system in a company instructing of employees at work place and training the employees for safe work methods. • Competence of carrying out the indoor work environment monitoring in cooperation with a labour safety specialist and knowing how to act in emergency situations.

Course plan

1.Labour protection system, regulatory documents. 2. Hygiene and sanitation, factors in the working environment. 3. Options for improving the job protection system. 4. Risks, characteristics, measurement, protection of the working environment. 5. Ffire safety, regulatory enactments regulating it. 6. Fire safety documentation. 7. Ffire, its locale and disposal. 8. Electrical safety. 9. Structure, legal framework, organisation and management of the civil protection system. 10.. Civil Protection Commissions of Local Governments. Risk assessment. 11.. Tasks, rights and obligations of State, local government, legal and natural persons in the field of civil protection. 12.. Special legal regimes (emergency and exceptional situations). Planning of civil protection measures. 13.. Objects of increased danger, the duties and rights of the owner or lawful possessor thereof. 14.. Hazardous substances, their classification and their storage and transport requirements. 15.. Luring and providing international assistance. 16.. First aid skills in life-critical situations, call for assistance. Personal protective equipment in the event of a disaster.

Requirements for awarding credit points

The accumulating assessment shall be received by students who have worked the practice, participated in the workshop sessions and obtained an assessment of not less than 5.0 parties. An assessment shall also be obtained in the form of a test, which shall demonstrate the knowledge and understanding of regulatory enactments. Final assessment — arithmetic mean of theoretical knowledge and practical skills. The form of learning evaluation - for all full and part-time basic higher education education programmes - shall be marked; for all full and part-time secondary higher education basic education programmes - examination.
