Course abstract

Study course provides knowledge about higher education system in Latvia, knowledge of the acquired specialty, the study process organization and normative bases of study. Knowledge of LBTU, Faculty of Economics and Social Development, of the structure and management is obtained. Program design and course contents, methods of studying and study skills and research skills are introduced. Study works and their requirements of performance and execution are introduced. The skills to use library databases for research and development of the study process are acquired. Knowledge of LBTU available study resources, study and exchange opportunities in foreign countries are acquired.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

1. Students will be able to: demonstrate the knowledge of the speciality pursued the content of the study programme, study process management and the legal framework for studies at LBTU – essay.
2. Demonstrate an understanding and knowledge of the history, organisational structure and administration of LBTU and ESAF - mind map.
3. Demonstrate an understanding and knowledge of the training and research farm of the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies "Vecauce" - independent work.
4. Apply the knowledge acquired and the learning methods and styles learnt - independent work.
5. Justify the professional choice – essay.
6. Explain and present the study results to others - demonstration of a mind map.
7. Work in a team - mind map.
8. Responsibly plan the completion of the assignments given - independent work and an essay.

9. Use library and electronic resources in learning and doing research - independent work.

1. Introduction (lecture – 2 hours, practical – 1 hour)
2. Kinds of studies (lecture – 2 hours, practical – 1 hour)
3. Rights and responsibilities of students (lecture – 1 hour, practical – 1 hour)
4. Student social life (lecture – 1 hour, practical – 1 hour)
5. Organisational structure of Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies (LBTU). The Constitution of LBTU. Establishment and historical evolution of LBTU. Academic institutions of LBTU. LLU faculties, departments and institutes. Training and research farm of the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies "Vecauce" (lecture – 2 hours, practical – 1 hour, visit to the training and research farm of the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies "Vecauce" - 16 hours)
6. Faculty of Economics and Social Development (ESAF). Establishment and historical evolution of ESAF. Organisational units of ESAF. The Council of ESAF. The Dean. Directors of institutes. The director of a study programme. ESAF traditions (lecture – 2 hours, practical – 1 hour)
7. LBTU academic personnel (lecture – 1 hour)
8. Basics of a bibliography. Information search in databases. Opportunities for a registered user in BIS ALEPH databases (lecture – 2 hours, practical – 4 hours)
9. Basics of Moodle and the use of it at LBTU (lecture – 2 hours, practical – 2 hours)
10. ESAF requirements for writing and formatting student papers (lecture – 1 hour, practical – 2 hours)

11. Skills needed for an entrepreneur (practical – 2 hours)

Requirements for awarding credit points

Cumulative score consisting of the scores of components of the course.
Three practical assignments have to be completed during the course:
(1) use of e-resources and library resources in Moodle,
(2) formatting documents in accordance with the guidelines for writing and formatting student papers and uploading the documents to Moodle,
(3) designing and demonstrating a mind map about the history, organisational structure and administration of LBTU and ESAF,
and two independent works.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

An essay on the choice of the study programme, wishes and expectations regarding studies at LBTU has to be written (at least one page in size, uploaded to the Moodle system until the end of the semester).
An independent work about the training and research farm of the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies "Vecauce" has to be written.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

To earn a pass mark, a mark of at least 4 has to be acquired in all the practical assignments and independent works.
