Course abstract

Students learn to measure horizontal and tilt angles, magnetic azimuths, direct and indirect edge length measurements, calculate orthogonal coordinates of stroke points and determine point heights using geometric and trigonometric leveling. During the practice, students carry out a 1:500 scale topographic surveying of the lane using optical theodolites and total station and make a topographic plan. The students make the course of the route in the area, the picket of the route, the calculation, and drawing of two curves and the measurement of the longitudinal and transverse profiles of the route. Students practically learn surface leveling methods, get acquainted with single-frequency GNSS receiver and its application in forest surveying, and get acquainted with other surveying methods

Learning outcomes and their assessment

1. Knows the inspection and regulation of geodetic instruments, types, and execution of geodetic measurements, horizontal and vertical surveying methods, drawing, designing of graphical materials and mathematical processing of geodetic measurements.
2. Can use the acquired theoretical knowledge in practice - to set up and measure horizontal, vertical and topographic surveying support network, to perform situation and terrain, as well as road track measurement by various methods, to evaluate the obtained measurement accuracy, to process measurement results plans and profiles, work diligently and accurately, work independently as well as in a team, draw up measurement logs, plans, profiles, and other documents as required.

3. Can independently acquire, select and analyze information necessary for the performance of work intended for practice, to make decisions according to his / her competence and to solve problems related to the work to be performed, understands professional ethics, assesses the impact of his / her professional activity. They can critically evaluate their knowledge and skills and understand the need for further education and are responsible for the quality of their work.

Course Content(Calendar)

1. Establishment of a network of topographic surveying support points.
(a) Recognition of the plot to be surveyed.
(b) Landing support network formation for horizontal surveyings: a test of instruments; strengthening points in the area; measuring two-way excesses with a tape measure using eclimeter; detection of inaccessible distance; measuring the angle of the polygon with theodolite; measurement of the magnetic azimuth of the walking edge with a compass (one line direct and opposite); calculation of polygon point coordinates; creation of 1:500 scale polygon plan.
(c) Determination of vertical surveying points by technical leveling: leveler tests; technical leveling of polygon points; attaching a leveling stroke to leveling sign; calculation of point heights.
2. Tachymetry with theodolite: determination of theodolite rangefinder correction; determining and correcting zero points in the vertical arc; tachymetric situation and terrain surveying using polar method; plan drawing up, controlling and drawing a blueprint.

Drawing curves by orthogonal coordinates and polar methods. Path picking of the track and set of cross-sections. Leveling of a track, calculation of point heights and drawing of longitudinal and transverse profiles. Project line design and calculation.
4. Surveying of a small parcel of land with orthogonal coordinates.
5. Set of a grid of squares, leveling of points, drawing of terrain, design of slope.

6. Construction site identification: Preparation of geodesic data for the construction site. Designation of construction axes. Installation of fencing at project height. Transfer of construction axes to fencing railings.

Requirements for awarding credit points

Must complete all practice assignments and pass the practice test.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

The student independently completes the practice assignments according to the program and prepares the practice report.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

After the practice report is prepared and handed over to the practice supervisor, the student takes the practice test.
