Course abstract

Aim of the study course is to provide with information about the importance of geodetic support systems in the successful development of the national economy, the principles of their development, long-term protection and preservation. Surveying methods, reconstruction works, current normative documents, organization of surveying works considered. Master students acquire skills in working with surveying tools, application of computer programs in measurement data processing.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

• knowledge and understanding of the geodetic network system types, their creation methods, taking into account the expected tasks of the network, accuracy performance and terrain character - exam
• skills to independently perform precise angle, distance, elevation and GNSS measurements, mathematically process measurement results and evaluate their accuracy - exam

• competence to rationally organize the creation of necessary precision geodetic network by selecting the most appropriate methods and tools, depending on the network task - exam

Course Content(Calendar)

1. Relation of professional activity with the representation of the Earth's surface and the problems of their applications; (1h)
2. The surface of the earth and the basics of its mathematical descriptions, coordinate systems in the world, altitude systems, their interrelation; (1h)
3. Basic principles of surface imaging in the plane; (1h)
4. Plane coordinate systems, projections used in the world and in Latvia; (1h)
5. Necessity and principles of coordinate recalculation; (1h)
6. Understanding of Geodetic measurements; (1h)
7. Understanding of the scale and accuracy of imaging of the Earth's surface; (1h)
8. Provision of practical connection of the Earth's surface with the mathematical reference system; (1h)
9. Geodetic networks and their systems, structure of geodetic support system and its maintenance; (1h)
10. GNSS applications principles and basics; (1h)
11. Geodetic signs and basics of their creation; (1h)
12. Design and applications of geodetic networks for various purposes. (1h)

Laboratory works:
1. Coordinate systems - practical application (reading, delay, measurement) scaling - calculations; (2h)
2. Measurement and determination of distances and areas in plans and maps, as well as their design in the plan after measurements; (2h)
3. Measurement and determination of directions and azimuths in plans and maps, their postponement according to measurement data; (2h)
4. Execution of measurements with geodetic instruments - theodolite / electronic tachometer; (2h)
5. Execution of measurements with geodetic instruments - leveler / profile development; (2h)

6. Execution of measurements with geodetic instruments - GNSS receiver / plan development. (2h)

Exam

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

Independent work related to the course of laboratory work - acquiring additional knowledge (studying literature, searching for information on websites) and practical experience for the successful solution of specific tasks.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

The exam is taken in writing (after the ticket) and orally - by answering questions
