Course abstract

Research work on an exact theme should be worked out, exposing the ability to characterise the topic’s choice in a relatively short text, its urgency. The course of work, chosen parameters for comparison and calculation methods are described, stressing their prerogatives and efficiency. The work’s results are put into shape of conclusions and recommendations.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

• Knowledge: to carry out scientific research in the field of construction, extended knowledge of the methodology of research development, in-depth knowledge of the writing, presentation and presentation of the publication, and understanding of the relevant norms adopted in Latvia and in the international scientific space.
• Skills: to develop new engineering theories and methods in related fields of construction; ability to independently develop research methodology, to base on the basis of the chosen data acquisition methods, to collect, systematize and analyze the collected information material, to substantiate the development of theses, conclusions and proposals on the basis of the applied research methods.
• Competence: the ability to carry out scientific research in the field of civil engineering, the ability to choose research techniques and technical means, to study building materials, construction products and to look for new technological techniques, with particular emphasis on their advantages and effectiveness, to justify the research methodology and the results obtained.

Course Content(Calendar)

1. The choice of the topic of research and the reasons for its relevance. 2. Formulation of the purpose of the research work and the tasks to be performed. 3. Development of the methodology. 4. Preparation of Literature Review. 5. Collection of materials and creation of a database. 6. Compilation of the list of used literature. 7. Research and systematization of the collected materials, in accordance with the basic issues of the chosen topic. 8. Description of the solution variants, their execution. 9.Extraction of experimental data. 10.Reason for the calculation methods used in the work and analysis of the results. 11. Summary of results and work design. 12.Designing conclusions and proposals. 13.Designing of studies. 14. Preparation of published theses. 15. Submission of published theses and preparation of presentation. 16 Presentation of the results of the research work at the scientific conference.

Requirements for awarding credit points

The research work should be carried out independently, in consultation with the supervisor. The results of the research work and the analytical part of the collected and systematized materials should be represented in the "Civil engineering study program for students and master students in the scientific conference "Civil Engineering" and submitted in the form of theses in the conference report thesis collection. The amount of work planned, prepared and defended research work must be fulfilled, receiving a mark.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

The research work consists of 3 main parts: • introduces; • the content is presented in accordance with the sections provided for the task: the problem or solvable task, the current state, variants of the solution, the justification of the choice and forecasts, calculations, volumes, etc.; • closing - main conclusions, proposals.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

Research work is an independent theoretical, experimental and / or practical study. In defending the research work the student's ability to freely apply the knowledge acquired during studies and to independently select the literature necessary for the work, the ability to compile, analyze and critically evaluate the information on the question and formulate reasoned conclusions and proposals is evaluated.
