Course abstract

The course introduces students to the earth roadbed and surfacing of motor roads, water diversion system and motor road facilities, bridges and culverts, as well as construction and operation of motor roads. The software GEO5 is used.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Knowledge: on the structure, applicable materials, construction and operation of motor roads and bridges. Skills: familiarity with particular structures of motor roads and their calculation principles. Competence: familiarity with technical projects of motor roads and the branches of road construction and operation. Examination.

Course plan

1. Road junctions (intersections and interchanges).
2. Earth roadbed. Properties of soils. Hydrothermal regime of earth roadbed.
3. The persistence of slopes of earth roadbed. Reinforcement of slopes of earth roadbed.
4. The types of earth roadbed deformations and persistence of earth roadbed on soft soils.
5. Water diversion from road. Roadside ditches. Drainage.
6. Motor road surfacing. The classification and structure of surfacing.
7. Motor road facilities.
8. Parking places. Test.
9. Artificial structures for overpassing local obstacles and their classification.
10. Basic parameters and structures of bridges.
11. The foundations of bridges.
12. Culverts and their structures.
13. The construction of motor roads.
14. The use of industrial by-products in road constitution.
15. The operation of motor roads.
16. The environmental impact of roads.

Requirements for awarding credit points

The test and examination (written and oral) are passed.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

Study of literature on theoretic materials.
Preparation for test and examination.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

The results of the test. The knowledge and skills shown on examination.
