Course abstract

The aim of the course paper - to gain knowledge of the heating and ventilation systems at the residential buildings. Structure and parts of the ventilation systems. Some basic methods of the calculations and design for proper operation of the systems

Learning outcomes and their assessment

After course acquisition students must be able to make right decisions in assembling heating, ventilation and air conditioning system elements, calculations of them, to assess an consequences of wrong operation of systems, planning of right sequence of works, safety and quality control of works. Defending the course project presented in the LLU e-studies. • Knowledge about microclimate systems for residential buildings, their structure, components and preconditions for proper functioning; • Skills to calculate simple engineering systems , selection and calculation of main equipment and energy resources; • Competence in field of water, steam, air, gas, electric and heat pump heating systems of the buildings and ventilation.

Course Content(Calendar)

1 Input data for the design of heating and ventilation . 2 Thermal calculation for building envelope. 3 Heat loss calculation. 4 Check the temperature of the internal surface of the outer wall. 5 Estimation and comments of the heat loss of the building. 6 Ventilation system calculation. 7 Ventilation channel calculation. 8 Development of the drawings.

Requirements for awarding credit points

Cours project have to be defended.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

After receiving an task of the independent course project, students need to get acquainted with the content of the assignment and the work plan. Drawings of the building should be checked in order to fully understand the building structure and division of premises. Students should study the normative literature and manuals required for the work. By completing an independent course project, students must acquire skills to make simplified calculations in the areas of heating, ventilation and air conditioning in buildings.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

Skills for practical use of theoretical knowledge in the design of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems of the buildings - choosing the rational and effective solutions of the systems and the choice justification. Evaluation of capabilities to analyses the project solution. Skills to choose heating, ventilation and air conditioning solutions for specific buildings. Knowledge of the requirements of LBN and MK regulations in the areas of heating, ventilation and air conditioning: https://likumi.lv/ - LBN and MK regulations for heating, ventilation and air conditioning and knowledge of their changes. The course project is judged to be excellent if the lecturer does not show any unfulfilled claims and the student correctly answers all 6 questions; excellent if the score for the 6 questions is greater than 50; very good if the score is over 45; good grades receive course projects with a score greater than 40; almost good if the score exceeds 35; average if the score exceeds 30; almost average if the score is over 25, but course projects with 25 errors are judged unsatisfactory and the student is given a new course project assignment. A course project with less than 25 errors may try to defend in response to 6 questions.
