Course abstract

The course is aimed for mastering the basic knowledge on static equilibrium of structures and elements under external actions (loads). Student learns to use method of section for internal force calculation in different loading conditions. Course gives a basic knowledge about ralation between internal forces, stresses and deformations.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

1. Student have to be capable to analyse stability and calculate internal forces of kolumn or beam using section method and equations of force equelibrium. Test Nr.1, homework Nr.1
2. Student have to be capable to analyse stability and calculate internal forces of truses using section method and equations of force equelibrium. Test Nr.2, homework Nr.2

Course Content(Calendar)

1. Section method. Equelibrium of internal and external forces in sectieon.
2. Definitions and sign conventions of the internal forces (axial force, shear force, bending moment, torsion). 2D and 3D loading.
3. Beams and columns. Determination and graphical representation of internal forces in members. (diagrams of internal forces)
4. Truses. Truss geometrical analysis, static determinability.
5. Determination of axial forces in trusses by the method of joints.
6. Determination of axial forces in trusses by the method of sections.
7. Mechanics of elastically deformable bodies. Hooke’s law. Stresses. Tension, compression, shear, bending and torsion. Normal stresses and shear stresses. Strains. Modulus of elasticity, modulus of shear.

Requirements for awarding credit points

Examination: A practical tasks on one of the main topics and one teoretical question for testing of his/her basic knowledge.
Prerequisites: Successfully passesd two tests. Independently finished ang Handed in two given homeworks. Student must be able to discuss the results.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

1st Test, 1st homework. Determination and graphical representation of internal forces in beams.
2nd Test, 2nd homework. Geometrical analusis of truses. Determination of axial forces in trusses.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

Student will have positive assessment of test, if at least 50% of calculation records are correct.
The home work will be assessed basing on two criteria:
1) accuracy of results 2) ability to participate in conversation on calculations and results
