Course abstract

The aim of the study course is to acquaint with the structure and history of Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies (LLU) and the Faculty of Environment and Civil Engineering (VBF), with the structure of studies and regulatory documents, with the information sources for studies, with specifics of study process in civil engineering and with the career opportunities. Furthermore an introduction to the specifics of the design of buildings, develop a schematic design, architectural units and create a model of a building.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

Knowledge: about the structure and history of LLU and VBF, view on course contents to be acquired during studies and about job specifics of civil engineer in design offices and construction business companies, as well about Information System of the University. Lectures and field trips.
Skills: to search and find the information in regulatory documents of LLU, text books and periodicals, and to acquire some skills in construction design. Practical works
Competence: to gain understanding about the Information System of LLU, about regulatory documents of studies and construction, about the building design process and about the literature on LLU and VBF. Test – conversation.

1. Introduction. The contents, objectives and realization of the course. (1 h)
2. The constitution of the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies (LLU). Residential building plan (2 h)
3. The history and museum of LLU. The plan of a residential building. (2 h)
4. The study regulations of LLU. The development of a schematic plan of a building. (2 h)
5. The informational offering of LLU. (2 h)
6. LLU IS and e-studies. The cross-sections of a residential building. (2 h)
7. Informative, communication and marketing arrangements at LLU. (2 h)
8. The structure and academic personnel of the Faculty of Environment and Civil Engineering (VBF). The architectural units of a building. (2 h)
9. The history of VBF. Traditions in LLU and VBF. (2 h)
10. The plan of the study program and its realization. The development of graphic section of schematic design. (4 h)
11. The qualification of construction manager and civil engineer. (2 h)
12. The work of civil engineer in the building design. The execution of a schematic design of a building. (2 h)
13. The work of civil engineer in construction objects.(2h)
14. The work of civil engineer in construction supervision and the technical inspection of buildings. The making a model of a building. (2 h)
15. The work of the graduates (civil engineers) in the educational and scientific branches.(2 h)
16. Discussion – the summary of the course.(1 h)

Requirements for awarding credit points

A completed, accordingly executed and successfully presented schematic design of a residential building; a finished model of a building.
Informational offering of studies; a passed practical work.
Attended at least 85% of all classes.
Answers that prove the knowledge about the contents of the course; discussion.
Grading – passed.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

The creation of a schematic design and a model according to the criteria; practical works.
Informational offering of studies; practical work.
Individual study of relevant literature.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

The ability of a student to attest his/her knowledge and skills about the developed schematic design and the contents of this course (answering control questions).
