Course abstract

Aim of study course is get to know and learn about outdoor street furniture, which are functional, comfortable and safe in use. Understand small size architectonic and art element classification, diversity, use relationships, norms and rules for design. In course is included modern and historical environment object exploring, learning about constructions, equipment and hardness demands according to outdoor elements, giving understanding about use of elements. In study course students work out course paper with detailed work technical drawings and specifications.

Learning outcomes and their assessment

• Knowledge: structures, facilities, their designing requirements, application, style and artistic presentation of outdoor space; knowledge of safety regulations in structures and facilities.
• Skills: students are able to create a drawing for pavements of roads and squares, to design furniture and stairs in outdoor spaces, ramps and retention walls, create the design of fences and gates as well as other garden elements.
• Competence: students are able to select appropriate technically and artistically high-quality outdoor design elements for recreation, sport activities, children's play areas and organization of outdoor space.

Course Content(Calendar)

1. Environmental object and outdoor element significance, specific, use and classification. Styles of environmental objects.
2. LVS (Latvia state standard): material and equipment safety in outdoor.
3. Outdoor element – stair and ramp design. Formula of stairs, steep ratio. Types of stairs and retaining walls.
4. 1 practical work – design of stairs and ramp according to norms and in context of design territory.
5. Outdoor elements: terraces, platforms, bridges types of them and classification.
6. Outdoor elements: benches, chairs, lounger types of them and classification.
7. Sculptural works. Water in design project – fountains, cascades, cannels, etc.
8. 2 practical work – design of sculptural work, defining of materials and preparation of technical drawing according to idea.
9. Outdoor elements – gabions, fences, hedges, ways of fastening and solutions in outdoor.
10. Outdoor elements: signs, information boards types of them and classification. Bins, compost bins types of them and classification.
11. 3 practical work – modern environmental object design. Development of technical drawings and specification tables.
12. Outdoor elements – lighting classification. Bicycle stands and types of them.
13. Outdoor elements – playground equipment, classification of playground according to age, safety zones and importance of them.
14. 4 practical work – playground planning and design. Development of technical drawings and specification tables.
15. 1 test.
16. Defence of practical works and exposition of design works.

Description of the organization and tasks of students’ independent work

1 practical work – detailed solution of individual idea. Practical work has to be presented on technical drawing sheets according to presentation requirements.

Criteria for Evaluating Learning Outcomes

Evaluation of study course depends from process of practical work, conceptual solutions, technical drawings and visual material development, presenting. In study course practical works done it defined term and positive evaluation of test.
